50\365 Day 50!

January18

I’ve been thinking of cool shots to do for my day 50 photo. It is hard to believe that I made it to day 50. I have been contemplating doing a 365 for almost a year and a half now, so I am so happy to be actually doing it. Here I am meeting my first milestone!

It hasn’t always been easy, but I’m liking the results. I like that I have the time and creativity to set up shots and explore techniques that I wouldn’t otherwise mess around with.

I am doing a photo each day of myself as well as one of each of the kids. I’m finding that it is a lesson in being concise. When I was in high school we had to write papers that limited us to a certain amount of words. The papers covered big topics and the idea was that you had to learn to make your words pack punch.

I have tried to apply the concept to photography and my kids. For the past 3 years I have taken many, many photos each day of the kids, and I’ve been posting them on the blog. The thing is that not all of the photos really told a story, my photos were having to rely on each other to tell a complete
story. There is nothing wrong with that style of storytelling, but the truth is that I’m almost up to 10,000 photos taken of my two kids, and the oldest isn’t even yet 3! The photos may in the future have less meaning because there are so many of them. I only have one photo of my great, great grandfather, and it has a ton of meaning. When someone looks at these photos in 20 years, there will be a lot to sift through. I’m not saying that lots of photos are bad, I just thought I’d try an exercise meant to improve my photos and thus the meaning to my photos.

I thought I’d try to take a year and try to tell entire stories in only one photograph. It means that some things might be left out, but it is also meaning that more things are being told. I am able to focus on one single thing every day and make the photo about that one thing.

All in all, I’m liking this method of "memory categorization" for lack of a better term.

Thanks for taking the ride with me.

Oh… That weird round thing is the very first creme brulee I have ever made. I used Alton Brown’s recipe and man o MAN was it good. It was a perfect custard with a perfect brulee. I’m so proud of it.
